BAXTER'S LIFE STORY

We first saw Baxter as “Pet of the Week” on a local TV station in Denver, Colorado. The announcer held him in his arms. He was a little dog with a big heart. Closest the vets could figure out, he was a Jack Russell terrier/Schipperke mix. He’d been rescued by a local rescue group after being struck by a runaway driver. His hind end was completely smashed, and he was bleeding from his mouth, ears, etc. I imagine it would have been so much easier to put him to sleep, but the veterinarians and the rescue group insisted on trying to save him. They removed one hip, and his right hind leg was held together with pins and whatever else. The other hind leg was stronger, but his range of motion in the rear was haphazard at best. The leg without the hip kind of just followed along for the ride. He was mostly blind in the left eye, and then, shortly after I adopted him from the TV station and rescue group, he developed a degenerative muscular disease in his jaws. The only treatment was steroids, and the vets told me that his jaw would eventually stop working altogether, and he would not be able to eat or even open his mouth.

Baxter lasted a year and a half with me. Everyone who ever saw him in the park, on the beach, or just on the street, always stopped to admire and pet him. His vibrant, happy face and lovely coat caught everyone’s attention.
